You don’t know rejection until you have been rejected by a cat. This isn’t one of my usual post on instagram but it made my client laugh so I thought I’d share. Meet Bruno—my six-month-old kitten who is usually all about the cuddles. But not the other morning. I sat down with my coffee, ready for our usual morning snuggles, and Bruno? Completely rejected me. And I thought, “What did I do to upset the cat?” Later that day I had a coaching session and my client opens by saying she felt rejected at work. Two colleagues at work had declined her invite to connect over coffee. She has been working hard to increase her visibility and network in preparation for a new position. Since our last session, she had reached out to ten people in her company, and two had turned her down, saying they had heavy workloads. She had been mulling over this rejection for days. When we broke it down, it became clear it wasn’t personal. Her colleagues didn’t have the time, and she hadn’t done anything wrong. This kind of rejection will happen frequently throughout your career. And then I realised: my cat didn’t reject me because I’d upset him, although cutting back on his treats might not have helped. I recently had a session with a client who was struggling to find motivation for their goals. Earlier this month, they faced a setback at work, which left them doubting their abilities and questioning whether they could achieve their dreams. Confidence Doesn’t Make You Bad Yesterday, I had a session with a client who felt they lacked confidence in their leadership role. They often hesitated to speak up or share their opinions, and it was affecting them both professionally and personally. Interestingly, she came across as highly competent and knowledgeable, so I asked why she didn’t feel comfortable letting others see this. Her response was that she was afraid that if she showed confidence, others might think she believed she was better than them. What a breakthrough! You Are What You Think 💭 Have you ever wondered where your beliefs about money, relationships, and success come from? What is the terror barrier? The terror barrier is that overwhelming fear you face when you are about to do something new. It is that inner voice that tries to convince you that you are not capable or worthy of doing the things you want to do. What happens when you hit the terror barrier? When you hit the terror barrier, you convince yourself to stay where you are so that you do not need to go outside your comfort zone. Let’s say you want to apply for a promotion. The new position would require you to do some public speaking which is a little outside of your comfort zone. Just before you apply you begin to imagine yourself having to speak in front of people. The fear overcomes you and you begin to tell yourself that you don’t need a new role, that you are happy with the money you are earning and that life is busy enough. This is the terror barrier taking hold and dragging you back into your comfort zone. How do you overcome the terror barrier? Start by recognising what is happening. You are experiencing these feelings because you are about to do something you have never done before or something you find fearful. This does not mean you are not capable of doing these things. You need to push past the fear to the other side. Do you have a dream job you wish you had but you do not to have the qualifications, experience or confidence to go for it? If so, you might find yourself settling for less ambitious career goals that align with your current skillset instead of aiming higher to reach your desired position. If you do, you probably downsize your career goal to match your current level of experience instead of up-skilling to reach your goal. Let’s stop that and follow my four step process instead! Identify Exciting Positions: Choose 3 to 5 positions that genuinely excite you within your desired field. These should be roles that spark excitement, regardless of whether you believe you are currently qualified for them. Skill Assessment: For each of the chosen positions, create two lists. The first list should include all the skills and experiences you believe you possess, while the second list should outline the skills and experiences you feel you lack. Challenge Your Perceptions: Reevaluate your lists critically. Consider whether you truly lack experience in certain areas. Just because you have not held a specific job does not mean you lack the necessary skills. Many skills are transferable across different roles and industries. Set Actionable Goals: Based on your assessments, pinpoint the areas where you need to acquire additional skills or experience. Then, set clear, actionable goals to bridge those gaps. It’s crucial to remember that you don’t need to possess 100% of the required skills and experience to pursue a job opportunity. Even if you meet 60-70% of the criteria, go for it! At certain times in life, we will all experience a feeling of being stuck, whether it’s within our careers, relationships, or personal growth. Yet, these moments are not always negative, they signal the need for change. Personally, I’ve encountered these situations often throughout my life. It was only when I started viewing them as opportunities for growth and change that I was able to overcome those moments. The real challenge arises when we remain stuck for too long without taking steps to overcome it. Typically, this stagnation stems from two factors. Firstly, we fail to pause and reflect on our true desires. Whether it’s defining our career goals or clarifying our values, lack of clarity ultimately leads to feelings of being stuck. Secondly, fear often holds us back. Whether it’s fear of judgment or failure, these anxieties can be paralysing. Despite knowing what we want, we allow fear to convince us that staying where we are is safer, even if we are unhappy. This phenomenon, known as the “terror barrier,” is the moment we hesitate to pursue our dreams due to fear. To break free from stagnation, we must embrace these moments as opportunities for growth. By clarifying our desires and confronting our fears, we can begin to build a life and career that we find truly fulfilling. It took me years to understand this about confidence. A few years ago, if someone had told me I’d be running my own business, actively sharing on social media, speaking at seminars, and helping people worldwide achieve their dreams, I would have thought they were crazy. Public speaking used to terrify me. I would hesitate to share my opinions and put myself out there. Reflecting on my journey now, I can’t pinpoint the exact moment when things changed. I’ve learned that confidence is a result of action and not a starting point. Every small action I took paved the way for the next. I remember when I did my first ever social media post I was so nervous but with each post it got easier and now it is almost second nature. The same goes for my first video or Instagram live. The night before my first live seminar, I barely slept, but now I look forward to these events. Why? Because confidence isn’t the starting point; it’s the outcome of consistent action. Often, we convince ourselves we’ll do something when we feel ready, but the truth is, we’ll never feel fully prepared for something new. True confidence develops through exposure. We are often led to believe that we are limited by our circumstance, our resources and opportunities in life. While this can be true in some situations, more often than not it is the lack of confidence we have in our own abilities that hold us back from creating the life and career we want. When we lack confidence, it is challenging to recognise opportunities for improvement. Subconsciously, self-doubt hinders our ability to believe in ourselves. Many of us talk about going back to college, starting our business or changing our careers but we never do it. When we are talking about doing something we actually feel like we ARE doing something. We think about it and plan it in our heads but never move into action. It’s a comfortable place to be in. We are not taking action so we don’t need to go outside our comfort zone but we also don’t feel bad about oursleves because we feel like we are still doing something. The truth is, we are not doing anything! No matter how much you think or talk about something, if you never take action it will never happen! I know this first hand! For years I talked about going back to study and starting my own business but truthfully deep down I don’t think I was serious. I just didn’t want to feel like a failure so that is why I kept talking about it and making excuses as to why I had not started. That was until I realised that I did really want to do it but it was fear that was stopping me. Once you come to this realisation you can make a decision. What is more important to you? Taking a risk and maybe failing or succeeding at it, or staying in that place of fear forever where it is comfortable but then living with a lifetime of regret. I know which option I prefer. My go to tool for managing stressful and difficult situations. The new year brings with it opportunities for a fresh start. Many of us set new goals and are motivated to make meaningful changes in our life. What I have seen happen over and over again is that individuals work really well towards their goals until something stressful happens which throws them off route. Often, it’s not the unexpected situation that throws them off route but it’s the stress and anxiety which is caused by focusing on what they have no control over. When we direct our energy into the things we have influence over we move past the stress much quicker. Today I want to share my go to tool for managing stressful and challenging situations! This is a simple tool which can be used in both work and personal situations. It’s called the CIA model. You want to analyze the situation in three categories. What you can control, influence and accept. Control - Identify which elements of the situation do you have direct control over. Influence - Identify which elements of the situation can you not control but perhaps influence Accept - Identify the things that you cannot control or influence, and try to accept the situation for what it is. Remember, stressful situations are much easier to navigate when you focus your energy on the things you have control and influence over. Take a second to imagine where you will be a year from today if you change nothing in your life. This is probably one of my favourite questions to ask my clients. Why? Because it highlights that they will be in the exact same place as they are today if they do not make a committed decision to act and make changes. We all have desires and dreams we hope to fulfil but if you are not consciously committing yourself to achieving them you are going nowhere. For many of my clients the thought of being in the same place elicits much more fear than the thought of having to actually go outside their comfort zone to achieve the changes they so badly want. Now take a moment to envision where you see yourself next year. Even if the route to achieving that vision is unclear, make a deliberate commitment today to take every step possible towards turning that vision into reality. Politely decline invitations or requests that may push your limits. By setting healthy boundaries, you create space for joy and reduce stress. Your mental health is a top priority, and it's okay to prioritise it, especially during the festive season. ❤️ Spread Kindness, Including to Yourself This season, extend the warmth of kindness not only to others but also to yourself. Embrace imperfections, take breaks when needed, and celebrate the small victories. Did you know that individuals who commit their goals to paper are 42 percent more likely to achieve them compared to those who don't? There are several reasons for this: 1. Jotting down your goals helps you in clarifying what you aim to achieve. 2. Putting your goals in writing increases self-accountability. 3. It serves as a constant reminder of your objectives. In December of last year, I wrote down my top goals for 2023 and placed them where they would catch my eye frequently: 1. Launch my business on social media, ensuring a minimum of three posts per week, including videos. 2. Launch my signature coaching programme by July. 3. Get invited to speak at career seminars by September. 4. Boost the growth of my business by engaging with a business coach. I successfully attained my top goals for 2023 and the key factor contributing to this achievement was consistently writing down my goals and having daily reminders. As we approach 2024, I encourage you to contemplate your goals and write them down. Consider these tips: 1. Be specific about your goals, providing detailed information on what you aim to achieve and by when. 2. Your life might be easy today, but it will be hard tomorrow! Living on autopilot is easy because it offers us comfort in the moment, but it makes life harder in the future. You may spend evenings binge watching Netflix, going out for dinners and trips you can’t afford, postponing essential tasks and priorities. All of this makes the present moment enjoyable, however this brings challenges in the future. Years slip by, and you find yourself stuck in a job you dislike causing daily anxiety, far from the life you envisioned of affording luxuries and dream experiences. This does not need to be the outcome! The key lies in embracing difficulty today to pave the way for an easier tomorrow. This might involve sacrificing leisure time spent watching TV, playing video games or socialising, but such sacrifices will bring you substantial returns. Reflecting on my own journey, while pursuing my coaching accreditation alongside a full-time job, socialising and material indulgences took a backseat for a while. It was often stressful and required sacrificing time on the weekends and other things I enjoyed. Yet, these sacrifices have proven invaluable bringing so much joy into my life. Today, my life is full of fulfilment, purpose, and passion. The confidence and self-belief I gained during those two years continue to shape my future, making present sacrifices worthwhile. Consider what easy choices you are making now that may lead to hardships later. Identify areas where you can endure short-term challenges and make necessary sacrifices for a more rewarding future—whether it's further education, attending seminars, pursuing a dream job, or any other aspiration.
